Indoor Air Quality Hazards...

Hazards of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)

Health professionals, researchers, media and statistics are increasingly reminding us about the hazards of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). Several products on the market are claiming to clean and filter the air you breathe in your home. These are concerns that we have taken serious at Black Forest Heating & Cooling. - "Home of the Service Champions"

Common irritants, such as mold, dust, bacteria and fungi are contributing to the health hazards of IAQ. Research reminds us that for every ounce of dust there are about 40,000 dust mites and each mite produces approximately 20 fecal pellets per day.

As you may already know, the statistics of IAQ are alarming. In children, asthma has increased 600% over the past 30 years. Wow! Did you know that respiratory illness is the 3rd largest cause of death, behind heart disease and cancer? According to the American Medical Association this is due to poor indoor air quality.

There is a common misconception about new homes. After realizing that many of the materials used in building a new home are processed with very hazardous substances, consumers are looking to seek solutions.

For example, the wood to frame and trim your home has been processed chemicals such as formaldehyde as well as the use of formaldehyde glue which emits all gases into the air inside your home. And, for that great new carpet smell...well you are breathing the off gas of the chemicals that are used in processing it and the glues used to adhere it. These chemicals will emit gasses in your home for several years. The paint and stains used in the finish of a new home also has toxins that are emitted in the air.

In fact, the air you breathe in your home has been found to have 2-5 times and in some cases 100 times more pollutants than the outdoor air you breathe. Environmental Science and Technology, September 2003 edition, published the results of the Silent Spring Institute Environment Study on Chemical Components. It states that of the 120 homes studied, 100% of them had toxic compounds in the air. Of the 20 compounds tested, they found 15 of them that exceed health regulations; some of which are banned substances.

Many consumers are seeking solutions for improving their IAQ. For example, there are stand alone air cleaners that claim to clean the air. The problem with units like this is that they attempt to clean the air in one room or small areas and take living space. In addition, Consumer Reports have tested these products and found many of the top sellers do not work as they have claimed. They do not provide the circulation necessary to clean the air in even one room. Another solution that consumers are seeking is quality duct cleaning - be careful. The old adage is true in this case..."you get what you pay for". When investing your money in duct cleaning, make sure that the nine step process to properly clean and steralize your duct is used as well as proof that your duct clean; such as a camera designed to look inside your duct system. Without a clean duct system, pollutants will continue to be part of the air you breathe in your home.
